By T. Loi • May 5th, 2010 • Category: NewsOn January 25 – 29, Bethel students expressed their school spirit on Spirit Week by dressing up for the following days: Nerd Day, Retro Day, Fake-an-Injury Day, Career Day and the traditional Warrior Day.
“I enjoyed dressing up as a nerd a lot. It was an opportunity to show my school spirit in a fun and silly way,” said Diana Pham, eighth grade.
On Fake-an-Injury Day, Pham was “feeling very uncreative,” but she enjoyed “being able to have these injuries without feeling the pain.”
Caree Morley, senior, said she enjoyed dressing up for Spirit Week especially as a nerd, but added, “I had to go to the doctor’s that day in my nerd outfit, and I definitely got some stares.”
Morley added, “It made me smile to see all those who participated and went ‘all out’.”
Leilani Phan, sixth grade, said that she designed her very own shirt on Retro Day. “Fashion today has better material and styles,” said Phan. On Career Day, Phan was a photographer which she would like to be when she grows up.
Ruth Jenkins, eighth grade, said that
“it was fun to see others’ ideas and craziness” on Nerd Day.
Priscilla Lopez, sophomore, enjoyed dressing up on Warrior Day because she was wearing her pink jersey with the others, and “we felt unique.”
At the end of the week, the Spirit Award was presented to the class that earned the most points for participation. This award went to fifth grade who won with 527,000 points. Eighth grade won second place with 525,000 points and second grade won third place, with 520,000 points.
The Warrior Award was also presented to one student in elementary and one one student in the junior high and high school who exhibited the most spirit.
The winners of the Warrior Award were Chandler Kirkland, fourth grade, and Thalia Arredondo, senior.
Kirkland said, “I like Retro Day because I enjoyed being a hippie from the 70s.” He added, “I thought it was great how I won the Warrior Award for elementary, and it was a miracle because I never won anything like this before.”
He added, “The hardest day for me was Nerd Day because it felt weird when I was wearing my mom’s glasses and a stretched shirt.”
Students went “all out” showing school spirit and making lasting memories.
