Bethel’s AP classes continue from AP Economics to AP U.S. History (APUSH).

Last spring students had the opportunity to take the AP Economics class taught by Dr. Terry Cantrell, school administrator, and many continued the challenge this year by taking APUSH taught by Mrs. Jennifer Simonds, history department head.

AP classes are college classes that are available to students who are willing to meet the challenge. These courses help students prepare for advanced college courses and allow students to earn college credits that will benefit them in the future.

Juniors and seniors spent their summer vacation preparing for the fall APUSH class. Students were given extensive assignments and also went to Mrs. Simonds’s house to watch the movies The Patriot and Amistad. The students engaged in open discussion comparing and contrasting the events depicted in the movies with the actual events.

Tammy Huynh, senior, says, “ I took  the AP class because I wanted to challenge myself in my senior school year, and it has been super challenging. I’m not shooting for an A. I’m shooting to do my best, and in doing so glorify God.”

Due to the rigorous work load a few students have dropped the class. Mrs. Simonds says that it is important for students to understand their limitations, but if they are using their time wisely they should not feel overwhelmed.

The juniors and seniors will continue to put much effort into taking this class. They must be prepared to answer difficult multiple choice questions and extensive essay questions that test their knowledge of U.S. History from Columbus to the present day.

The APUSH exam will take place on May 7, 2010.
