Warriors Tame Lions
By h.phan • Sep 22nd, 2009 • Category: SportsThe Warriors tame the Crystal Cathedral Lions on rival territory on Sept. 22.
The two-dollar entrance fee included a red star-shaped stamp and a match that proves to be worth the cost.
The first game becomes quite the disappointment to Bethel fans. Athletic Director Joel Simonds bluntly says, “We got smoked.” “The girls seem afraid to dive,” notes a bystander. The Lions take the game 25-15.
Tammy Huynh, outside hitter, takes the second game 25-16 for the Warriors tying the match scores. Thomas Loi, line judge, states, “I think they (Warriors) are doing wonderful. The first game they didn’t do so well, but they improved.”
When asked about pre-game thoughts for the third game Priscilla Lopez, outside hitter, enthusiastically replies, “I’m pumped.” Timothy Wright, alumnus, states, “I think they will come back and win this.”
As the third game begins, Mrs. Courtney Bakan, Bethel science teacher, and Mrs. Jennifer Simonds, Bethel history teacher, synchronize their cheer with the volleyball team in fierce spirit, “L-e-t-s-g-o!”
Unlike the beginning of the second game, the girls’ spirits are positive, and the Warriors have a considerable lead by the end of the game.
Mr. Carlos Arredondo, Bethel supporter, passes the ball to his daughter, Thalia Arredondo, outside hitter, who serves the winning point for the game. Mr. Arredondo comments, “Well, the good thing is that I gave the winning ball to my daughter.”
Mrs. Candide Lopez, Bethel supporter, shares her highlights of the game, “It’s been incredible! Hannah fought through her struggles. Pokey’s serves were amazing. Tammy had a good spike. And Caree gave an amazing pass!”
Before the fourth game, Loi confidently declares, “I actually think we might win because this third game was so good.”
However, despite the girls’ fervent spirit in the last game, the team seems dispirited at the beginning of the fourth. Coach Matt Thomas calls a timeout to energize the girls, and the game improves greatly. Senior Hannah Berg, opposite hitter, wows the crowd with a spectacular kill and keeps a straight game face.
With Warriors leading 20-15, the Lions’ captain calls a timeout to break Huynh’s impeccable serves. Her serve does break, but this gives Alise Moser, sophomore, a chance in the game.
Prior to the game, Moser said she was not enthused about the game because “all I do is sit on the bench.” When asked about her thoughts of the reality of finally getting to go in she replies, “When Matt told me I was going in, my heart dropped!”
The girls win the final game 25-17 and take the match.
