Championship Banner Night

By • Jan 8th, 2009 • Category: Sports

On Saturday, Jan. 10 the boys’ and girls’ varsity basketball teams will play Crystal Cathedral. But that is not what makes that night so special. Bethel Baptist High School will have their first ever Championship Banner Night. This is when they will hang up the past champion ship banners around the gym.

The banners of the 2000 boys’ basketball, 2002 boys’ volleyball, 2006 girls’ basketball, and the 2008 girls’ basketball championship banners will be put on display. All the players and coaches who were apart of the championship teams were invited so that they can be honored. This is a great opportunity for everyone to see what Bethel has accomplished.

Coach Joel Simonds, one of the championship coaches and the current coach of the boys’ basketball team said that this night is an opportunity to show what the kids have done in the past years because the championships that they have won are something to be proud of. Because of this special night, he hopes the teams that will be playing, represent and play with huge emotion.

Many of the players and coaches that we are honoring have also received awards in the leagues. Steve Fausneaucht was league MVP in 2002.  Jessica Hilo was Express League Athlete of the Year in 2006 also that year Coach Rob Stephens was Coach of the Year. In 2008 Coach Joe Roussel was Coach of the Year. And Angie Ruiz was league MVP in 2006 and 2008.

At 6 p.m. the girls will play. And in between games the ceremonies will begin.  The night will finish with the boys’ game at 7:30 p.m.  All who attend will help make this a very special event.
