Fun at the Farm

Mrs. Osborne’s and Mrs. Wright’s K-5 classes attended a field trip to the Centennial Farm on Monday, September 29th.

The kindergartners were energized and ready early Monday morning for their first field trip of the year.  The fun started as early as the bus ride with singing fun songs such as “Jesus Loves Me”, and other “kid” songs.

They saw a wide variety of animals from common farm animals such as pigs and sheep to more unusual animals like llamas and peacocks.

The students learned that cows are used to make hamburgers, milk, and their favorite: ice cream.  The kindergartners also learned that their clothing was made from cotton and were able to see the cotton plant in person.

A favorite activity among most of the children was holding the baby chicks.  The tour guide showed them pictures of the chick during its development phases and explained on a kindergarten level how baby chicks are formed and hatched.

Mrs. Wright’s favorite part was the vegetable garden with a large variety of plants including asparagus, cucumbers, and squash.  Each student was able to plant a seed and take it home to grow.  Mrs. Osborne’s class planted radish seeds while Mrs. Wright’s class planted mustard seeds.

Some of the animals the students saw were cows, oxen, pigs, goats, donkeys, llamas, sheep, hens, roosters, chicks, rabbits, worms, snails, geese, and peacocks.  Some highlights were petting Bill, the cow, and watching Freckles and Patches, two brother oxen, obey orders.
